College Signing Ceremonies for Two Members of Jackets Baseball

Two senior members of the Jackets Baseball Team penned their names to letters of intent to compete at the college level in signing ceremonies Wednesday.

Outfielder Pedro Martinez will be joining the Nighthawks Baseball program at National Park College in Hot Springs, AR. Martinez plans to major in business marketing.

First baseman Aubrey Whitehead will be on the ground floor of the revival of men’s baseball at Amarillo College, which has not participated in intercollegiate athletics since the mid-1980s. He plans to pursue a degree in engineering.

Jackets Head Coach Ross Taylor described Martinez as a steady player, who has continued to improve each season.

“I feel that will be reflected again this year, in Pedro’s final season of high school baseball,” Taylor said. “He has always shown a commitment to doing things right. He’s a hard worker.”

Whitehead, who anticipates playing outfield at the college level, was named All-District First Base as a junior. He also achieved All-Johnson County First Team recognition.

“Aubrey is also a hard worker who has gotten better—and better,” Taylor said. “He had a great junior year. Aubrey does a lot on his own, as well as with the team. He’s an inspiration for what it takes to play at the college level.”

The signing ceremony was the first of three planned for the 2021-22 school year for students in the CHS athletic program.
