Cleburne High School seniors Alonzo Gonzalez and Maryn Tennison have been honored by their fellow band members in being named Mr. and Miss Golden Pride for 2022.

            The announcement of the annual band recognition highlighted pre-game festivities on Friday as senior members of the Golden Pride and the CHS Showstoppers Dance Team were presented.

            Tennison serves as a drum major in the Pride and Gonzalez has consecutively been selected high brass section leader since he was a sophomore. Both are members of the band council.

            “We had five candidates for each recognition, based on nominations from their peers in the Golden Pride,” Band Director Jason Jones said. “It’s very special to be among the candidates, then selected for Mr. and Miss Golden Pride for your outstanding efforts as a band member.”

            “This honor represents how well you represent the Spirit, Unity, Trust and Attitude of the Golden Pride—and not just in band, but also at school and in the community.”

            Tennison’s participation in band began as a Smith Middle School sixth grader. Though her main instrument is the French horn, she learned how to play the mellophone for marching band and has played trumpet in the CHS jazz ensemble. Her proudest achievements include the leadership roles she has filled as both a section leader and drum major.

She has earned division 1 ratings on every solo and ensemble in which she has competed, advancing to the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest each year. As a freshman, she was a member of the Texas Music Educators Association 9th grade All-Region Band and was named to the All-Region band in her junior year. 

Tennison is also a member of National Honor Society, Beta Club, and National Art Honor Society, where she serves as the president. Her love for music and art is leading her to pursue a career in Film Studies.

            Gonzalez is a four-year trumpet player in the Golden Pride. He has been a member of the Wind Symphony throughout high school and the jazz band for three years. He has advanced to the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest every year, competing as both a soloist and in an ensemble.

As a freshman, he was awarded 3rd chair trumpet in the 9th Grade All-Region Band. In his junior year, Gonzalez and Tennison were a featured duet in the Pride’s 2021 UIL marching show, Dorothy’s Dream. He was awarded 3^rd chair trumpet in the TMEA All-Region Jazz band and was an All-Area Jazz qualifier. He also achieved All-Region Band recognition.

 He is a featured soloist in the Golden Pride’s 2022 UIL marching show A Day at the Zoo. His senior year music goals include auditioning for All-Region Band with hopes of qualifying for the Area round--and earning a division 1 score at the 2023 UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest.

Gonzalez is a member of the band’s Leadership Team, Health Occupations Students of America and National Honor Society. He attends Hope Church and is a member of Hope Youth. Following graduation, he will be attending Hill College with plans to earn an Associates of Applied Science degree in Echocardiography Technology.
