Vision
The vision of the Cleburne Independent School District (CISD) Dual Language Program is to cultivate growth, success, and awareness of bilingual, biliterate, and multicultural individuals.
Mission Statement
It is the mission of CISD to produce confident, bi-literate, bilingual, critical thinkers who value and preserve all cultures and languages as well as possess a rich linguistic repertoire in both languages. All stakeholders will have a clear and true understanding of the dual language program/curriculum by providing engaging learning opportunities. The goal of the Dual Language Program in CISD is to enable students to become competent in the comprehension, speaking, reading, and composition of both languages through the development of literacy and academic skills in both the primary and second language. The Dual Language Program will integrate and use research-based second language acquisition strategies in the content areas for ELL students. Within this program, we ensure that every child's native language, culture, background, and interests are respected and utilized in the learning process.
Definition: Dual language immersion is an educational approach in which students learn two languages in an instructional setting that integrates subject content presented in English and another language.

Dual Language Curriculum
The Spanish language arts and reading Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) reflect language arts standards that are authentic to the Spanish language and Spanish literacy; they are neither translations nor modifications of the English language arts TEKS. The Spanish language arts and reading TEKS embody the interconnected nature of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking through the seven integrated strands of developing and sustaining foundational language skills; comprehension; response; multiple genres; author's purpose and craft; composition; and inquiry and research. The strands focus on academic oracy (proficiency in oral expression and comprehension), authentic reading, and reflective writing to ensure a literate Texas. They are integrated and progressive with students continuing to develop knowledge and skills with increased complexity and nuance in order to think critically and adapt to the ever-evolving nature of language and literacy.
All Dual Language Curriculum can be found on the corresponding learning cycle guide for grades K-5. All dual language teachers must follow the dual-language "week by week" pacing guide for their grade level ELAR/SLAR instruction.

One Way Dual Language
Goals
The primary goals of our Dual Language bilingual program model are the following:
- The development of fluency and literacy in English and in an additional language for all students with special attention given to ELs participating in the program.
- The promotion of bilingualism, biliteracy, cross-cultural awareness, and high academic achievement
The Dual language immersion/one-way biliteracy program model serves students identified as limited English proficient. This model provides instruction in both English and Spanish, or another language, and transfers a student to English-only instruction in middle school. Instruction is provided to English learners in an instructional setting where language learning is integrated with content instruction. Academic subjects are taught to all students through both English and the other language.
CISD currently offers a One-Way Dual Language program model to English language learners in grades PK-5th at Cooke and Santa Fe Elementary Schools. Bilingual students are identified according to state policy through the Home Language Survey and language proficiency assessments approved by TEA. A Two-Way Dual Language Program is offered at Irving Elementary.
In August of 2020, Cleburne ISD will implement one-way dual language at Smith Middle School for students previously enrolled in a dual-language program in elementary school. Following the 6th grade year, students will enter Pre-AP and AP Spanish courses to achieve high levels of Spanish proficiency.

What is Two-Way Dual Language?
- Dual Language is both an additive bilingual program for Spanish-speaking students and a foreign language immersion program for English-speaking students. In Two-Way classrooms, a combination of native Spanish speakers and native English speakers are taught together in an effort to develop full bilingualism and bi-literacy for both groups of students.
- Implementation began in August 2018 at Irving Elementary. We currently have Two-Way Dual Language in Kindergarten - 5th grade. This program will grow each year as students promote to the next grade. This pathway will provide opportunities for Spanish high school credit/Advanced Placement college credit in middle and high school.
Why should I enroll my child?- Research has shown students who are bilingual perform at high academic levels.
- Global/cultural awareness & biliteracy are research-based 21st-century skills.
